It comes after police clocked a driver travelling at 135km/h near Kaniva on Monday.
Horsham Senior Sergeant Dave Ellis said the South Australian probationary driver was travelling on the Western Highway at Miram South.
He said while people exceeding the speed limit to such a degree was not uncommon in the Wimmera, offences had dropped over time.
“We've noticed a reduction – there are not as many of these offences as five years ago,” he said.
“We would like to think this is due to the continued messaging about the dangers, and changes in community acceptance of speeding in general.”
Horsham Police Service Area posted a message on its ‘Eyewatch’ Facebook page after the Kaniva incident, calling for people to think about their actions on the roads.
“Road trauma is not about statistics, it’s about people; real people who suffer real grief, real loss and very real injuries,” it read.
“Speed is one of the major factors contributing to road trauma on Wimmera roads.
“A vehicle, like the one detected near Kaniva, will take more than 130 meters to stop if the driver immediately applies the brakes.”
Senior Sergeant Ellis said reducing serious injury collisions and fatal collisions was a key priority area within Victoria Police.
“In our area we normally have targeted operations on key movement times – such as school holidays and long weekends – targeting speed, distraction offences, drugs and alcohol, and we do regular operations focusing on particular areas should the need be identified,” he said.
“But intercepting speeding vehicles is a daily activity for us.”
The incident near Kaniva was the second reported high-range speeding offence near the town this month.
A Chinese man lost his licence for travelling at 133km/h on the Western Highway on the first weekend of the month.
On the same weekend, a Dimboola probationary driver was caught travelling 75km/h over the speed limit at Pimpinio.
