Mrs Howie said the award was “most unexpected”.
“Many people are caring for and supporting someone in their life who has a disability or special needs,” she said. “It was a privilege in my role to share such a trust with the hope of providing a path of support.”
Mrs Howie’s daughter Shae died from complications of early onset dementia in March. She said few families were aware of her personal journey.
“The network was so important in providing me with silent support,” she said.
“These people, and their unending planning for their families with constant challenges in their day-to-day lives, are indeed my unsung heroes.”
Julie Dunmill nominated Mrs Howie for the award.
Ms Dunmill said Mrs Howie showed selflessness while working as the Wimmera parents support network co-ordinator.
