Scott Carey won the Horsham District league’s Dellar Medal as the best player for the 2017 season at a vote count on Monday night.
Laharum goaler Caitlin Story won the A Grade best-and-fairest award.
Carey was a clear winner of the annual medal, collecting 31 votes – 12 more than Robbie Miller of Laharum, who was ineligible. Carey polled votes in 12 of the 16 games.
Story finished the season with 38 votes – eight ahead of runner-up, Harrow-Balmoral’s Ebonie Salter. She polled in 14 of the 16 games.
Carey said it was “a bit of a surprise” to win the award.
“(The count) was nerve racking. I feel like I was consistent through the year but not to that extent,” he said.
“As a team (we had) a lot more wins. I really enjoyed playing with the bunch of blokes we have (at Swifts) … It makes it a lot easier, obviously being the coach, when the team is playing such good footy.
“It’s great to be involved.”
Carey said thanked the club for its support.
“They have shown a lot of faith in me over the years,” he said.
“The team … I couldn’t have done it without them. But more importantly, anyone who has ever volunteered, helped out, given me advice… I take it on board and it all helps.”
Carey said he put winning the award down to playing his role to the best of his ability.
“Just do whatever the team needs – whether it be more defensive or trying to get the ball out of the middle and give it to someone else,” he said.
“Being under and around the umpires nose in midfield probably helps a little bit, too.”
Carey said seeing the improvement of his club, on and off the field, has been a major highlight for him.
Story said it was surreal to hear her name being called out as the league’s best and fairest.
“I came here tonight not believing I could do it but I’m very proud of myself and the team and I’m very honoured to be up here with Ebonie (Salter),” she said.
