The Australian Reading Hour is Australia’s biggest celebration of reading with thousands of people taking time out of their day to read for an hour.
Library spokeswoman Leanda Elliott encouraged people throughout the Wimmera to head to their local library to get lost in an old favourite or discover a exciting new tale.
“The Australian Reading Hour is the one event that everyone can take part in,” she said. “It’s for all ages and all interests and you can do it at any time of the day or night.”
Ms Elliott said it was important that people of all ages participated in reading.
She said research showed that the activity reduced stress by 68 per cent and works faster than listening to music or going for a walk.
She said people were invited to bring their favourite book to the Wimmera Regional Library for a ‘book chat morning tea’.
There will be a selection of mystery books on display that people can read for an hour, before taking it home to finish.
“If you can’t join us in the library, come in and borrow a book to take home with you for later,” she said.
Ms Elliott said there would be special events and activities taking place during the day as part of the campaign.
“Each library has different activities planned. The Wimmera Regional Library, specifically, is inviting people to come in, have a cuppa and read for as long as they would like,” she said.
Libraries participating in the Australian Reading Hour on Thursday include Dimboola, Goroke, Horsham, Kaniva, Nhill, St Arnaud, Stawell and Warracknabeal.
Nhill library has organised its reading hour for 9.30am, Warracknabeal library at 10am and St Arnaud library at 10.30am.
The Australian Reading Hour event in Dimboola, Kaniva and Stawell libraries will commence at noon with the Goroke library hosting a reading session at 2pm.
