Funding from Wimmera Catchment Management Authority has enabled the use of an innovative technique which detects genetic traces that platypus, rakali and blackfish species leave behind in the waterways.
Students from Stawell West, Halls Gap Primary and Stawell Secondary schools will also be involved with water testing and a capture-and-release program.
Platypus were once widespread throughout the upper Wimmera waterways, but have recently suffered dramatic declines in abundance and distribution.
There will be a community information night regarding the program held at Dadswells Bridge Hall on Friday at 6pm.
