What she did not know as a child however was that her passion would lead to her having her own salon at 24.
Miss Cameron opened Menco in Horsham this month.
She started her hairdressing career working after school at Horsham’s Shine Hairdressing.
“I got an apprenticeship there and worked for a few years, then I had a bit of a break and traveled and did other work,” she said.
“Then I was offered a job in Ocean Grove at Park Lane Men’s Hairdressing.
“I have been working there for the past two years.
“I enjoy the men’s side of things, and the concept worked really well there.”
Miss Cameron identified a gap in the market in her home town, and started working towards establishing a business. “I had a lot of friends that I was cutting hair for when I’d come home,” she said.
“A few other guys I’d spoken to would get their haircuts done by ex-hairdressers and things like that because they didn’t want to necessarily have to wait a week for an appointment, or to book in as such.
“I thought it was a good chance to open a men’s salon where people can make appointments, or just walk in.”
Miss Cameron said she did not have a specific part of town in mind when creating the business, but knew she did not want to be limited by space.
“I wanted a shop I could easily grow into. My shop is quite big, so I can easily expand,” she said.
“I haven’t really had any difficulties in setting up the business – it’s actually been pretty smooth sailing.
“I thought it probably would have been a bit harder than what it has been, but the response around town has been pretty positive, so that has made it easier as well.
“I’ve had lots of people come through the door.
“It’s nice to have something a bit new and different in Horsham.”
Miss Cameron said though each person’s needs and preferred styles were unique, there were some clear trends.
“A lot of people have the really short sides and leave their hair really long on the top,” she said.
“But whatever anyone wants I can do.
“I can cut or style hair for any guy of any age, from as little as babies through to men.”
Menco is at 36 Firebrace Street, and is open from 8.30am to 6pm Monday to Friday, and from 8.30am to noon on Saturdays.
Miss Cameron said people could call the salon on 5382 4915 or visit the Menco page on Facebook to book an appointment or for more information.
