Heard’s primary role at the club has seen him oversee the club’s pre-season training as well as ongoing sprints and general conditioning for the past three seasons.
Club chairman Rod Dumesny said the hard work put in by Heard showed through when the club’s senior and under-14 side came home strong in the final quarter to win premierships.
“That’s not a coincidence,” he said. “He’s been doing a lot around the club for a number or years, we don’t just give this award based on one season of work.”
Heard was also joint coach of the under-14s, was on an advisory panel for senior coach Louie Dalziel and was willing to lend a hand in any way possible.
“He will be down at the club at any time that the kids want to be there to do extra stuff,” Dumesny said. “Any day of the week he will be there and he’s there at the weekends as well.”
For the first time this season the club also handed out a junior club person of the year award. The inaugural award went to Romi Miller.
“She helps out in any way she can,” Dumesny said. “After playing 17 and under netball she will also play C Grade and then run water for the seniors. When we hold catered functions she will help out by waiting tables and she will down at the netball courts from early in the morning doing various tasks.”
Dumesny said it was important to acknowledge the young contributors at the club.
“They are the future of our clubs,” he said. “It’s no secret that a lot of the board are getting older so its important we have the next generation coming through. All six nomination for the award will receive certificates.”
Paige Lloyd and Emma Hopper both received life memberships as part of the awards night. Dumesny said it was unbelievable that Lloyd had already reach the 150 game requirement.
“Paige made her A Grade debut at the age of 14 and forgo a lot of junior netball and has hardly missed a game,” he said. “Emma’s was a service award, she has been at the club since 2005 and has held down nearly every netball position at the club. She is very passionate about the club.”
The club’s best and and fairest awards were also handed out on the night.
Simon Hobbs won the senior football award from runners-up Deek Roberts and 2016 winner Rhona Conboy.
Emma Buwalda came out on top in the A Grade netball count. It is the second season in a row the young shooter has won the award. Abbie Avery finished as runner-up.
