The Wimmera Mail-Times has experienced plenty of change in its 58 years, and ‘building the new’ has perhaps never happened as rapidly as in the past few years.
Moving with our audience and ensuring we continue to provide news and advertising when and how they want it has necessitated change in many forms, including to a digital-first publishing format two years ago, allowing journalists to simultaneously publish to print and online.
It has also meant using new technology to engage with our audience.
Mail-Times readers can now access news in print and on any device through a range of apps and platforms, including the Mail-Times website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat.
Journalists regularly use Facebook live video to cover events and put the audience in the action and in the past two months the team has used new blog technology to cover football and netball finals in real-time. This technology launched only weeks before the team used it.
In September, our website had close to 966,000 page views, with about 86,000 of these being unique viewers.
In the advertising sphere, no longer is our offering purely print-based. The Mail-Times suite of products also includes online advertising, Google ads and website building among a suite of other products.
Within weeks, the Mail-Times will move to a new website model. Not only will this mean a new fresh look, but a more user-friendly experience – particularly when accessing the website from a mobile device or tablet.
Our print and digital ways of working – and our adaptation to new technologies as they continue to emerge – will ensure we can continue to provide wide and comprehensive coverage of Wimmera news, and present the information that matters most to our community.
