Victor, an expert in his field, entitled his address “Navigating the System” and shared his experience and knowledge with group members at the meeting.
As guest speaker, he provided helpful tips about:
- Managing our medical care.
- Getting the most out of our health care.
- Help and support within the community.
- Staying safe in hospital.
- Having our voices heard: advocacy and complaints.
- Planning for the future: leaving work, money matters, information about Powers of Attorney and advanced care planning.
Parkinson’s passport sheets were also handed out to members, with advice on medication – on time, every time.
These also hold important information for hospital staff when an inpatient and vital details such as neurologist contact details, local doctor contact details, and case manager if one.
He also mentioned the Fifth World Parkinson Congress to be held in Kyoto, Japan, in June 2019 where four representatives from Parkinson’s Victoria will be attending in official roles.
Thirty interested people from as far afield as Kaniva attended the meeting.
The highlight of the meeting was the presentation of a cheque for $6000 to Victor for Parkinson’s Victoria.
Over $4000 was raised from the August Walk in the Park and a further $500 from tulip sales.
The balance was the result of miscellaneous fundraising.
Members also discussed plans for the group’s Christmas breakup, which will be staged later in the year.
The support group provides emotional and social support to sufferers of Parkinson's, their families and friends and collects and distributes information about Parkinson's.
