Mellington had returned to the Horsham Saints in 2017 after spending 2016 with East Point in the Ballarat Football League and missing the entire 2015 season with a knee injury.
He had spent three years with the Roosters after two seasons with the North Ballarat Rebels and has opted not to continue his VFL career in order to play solely for Ballarat. During his time at the Rooster he played 14 games, seven in each of 2016 and 2017.
The signing of Mellington and his former Rooster teammate Tom Schnerring highlight an energetic Ballarat recruitment campaign.
Ballarat football manager Mark Verberne said the Swans’ were delighted with the way their recruiting had fallen into place. He said the focus had been on adding experience to a largely young developing list.
