St Brigid’s College student Corey McKerron came home with a silver medal around his neck. It was the year 11 student’s seventh time competing at the state championships but it was the first time he had placed. Prior to the event he said he was unsure of how he would fare but he jumped 13.24 metres to secure second place in the 17-year-old boys triple jump.
The jump was the final of his three and was a new personal best by 19 centimetres for McKerron. “In the end there was just two centimetres between me and the winner,” he said. “I won silver by a count back because third jumped the same distance as me as well.”
McKerron said he had not trained for the event. “It’s just turn up an jump,” he said. “I might train next year because it will be my final year and it would be really special to get gold.”
Holy Trinity Lutheran’s Dyson Parish snared a bronze medal in the 15-year-old boys shot put. He threw the 4 kilogram shot 13.13 metres and was only 16 centimetres off second place but Calvin Meaden was a clear winner with a throw of 15.75 metres.
Stawell Senior College also had plenty of success led by two Tom Walker medals. He won the open boys 3000 metre race by a narrow margin when he crossed the line in a time of 8.56.47. He was just 0.05 of a second faster than the runner-up while the bronze medal winner was a further two seconds behind. Walker’s time of 4.16.17 was nearly four seconds faster than the third place in the 17-year-old boys 1500m but he could not keep up with winner Angus Norman from Fitzroy High School.

Dakota Cosson also represented Stawell Senior College well in the 14-year-old girls shot put. Her throw of 9.84 metres was six centimetres clear of the bronze medallist but she was no match for Emily Ryan from Mentone Girls Senior College who threw a record 13.16 metres.
Eugene Read-Spinks of Marian College in Ararat won a bronze medal in the 14-year-old boys 400 metres when he ran a time of 57.13 seconds.
Fellow Marian College student Paddy Turner cleared 1.75 metres to claim third in the boys 18-20 high jump event. He also finished third in the 100 metre dash in the same age group with a time of 11.81 seconds.
Nhill College’s Cassidy Jones won a silver medal in the 18-20-year-old girls 1500 metres. She ran a time of 5.12.85.
