The centre announced in August it would establish the Growing Futures program to provide hands-on training programs for farming, gardening and floristry for Wimmera migrant communities and disengaged youth.
The centre has a lease agreement with Hindmarsh Shire Council to use Nhill’s former kindergarten building for the program.
Nhill Learning Centre chief executive Annette Creek said staff were busy planning the program, aimed at giving people basic skills to help them step into various industries.
“We are working with a lady from Horsham – a plant scientist – who is helping us formulate the program and is giving us some expert advice,” she said.
“We are hoping to start the program early next year.
“Things are definitely on the move, and we are really looking forward to what will come from Growing Futures – we think it will provide a range of opportunities.”
The program will initially run for one or two days each week.
