Cheney was one of three players locked up by the Crows during the week as Ben Jarman and Paul Hunter also re-signed.
Crows general manager of list management and strategy Justin Reid said Cheney has proven he has what it takes to compete at the highest level.
“While this year didn’t go to plan for him, he is excited for what next season holds,” he said.
Cheney played in all 24 Adelaide games during the 2016 season but injury setbacks plagued the 28-year-old’s 2017 season as he could not manage a game in the club’s senior side.
His first game of the season South Australian National Football League season was not until round six and played only seven more for the season.
A strong pre-season should create a good opportunity for Cheney to break back into the side in 2018 and add to his 77 AFL games at Melbourne, Hawthorn and Adelaide.
