In Section One Open, Horsham Lawn came up against a competitive Natimuk outfit on Friday night. Natimuk took the opening doubles rubber, before Horsham Lawn bounced back to claim two sets in a row.
Natimuk’s Henry Mackley comprehensively defeated Horsham’s Jack Hickmott 6-1 in their fourth rubber singles tie, setting up a pulsating finish to the match.
Horsham Lawn young gun Callum Hayes took control of the match in the fifth rubber, winning his singles set against Jackson Walsgott 6-2.
Jordan Toll closed out the win for Horsham Lawn, defeating Jaxon Jakobi 6-2.
Horsham Lawn junior co-ordinator Maree Thompson said the evening contest was a great match to watch.
“It was magnificent weather playing down there, the kids all really enjoyed it. It was a really close tussle,” she said.
“We won a couple sets and then they won a couple to catch up. It came down to the last set.”
Thompson also said playing on a Friday night had plenty of benefits for all of those involved.
“We’ve had at least one match every Friday night this season. They’ve been really successful – the parents are happy and the kids are happy to be playing on a Friday night,” she said.
Both Haven sides earned close victories in the other Section One Open contests.
Haven Green defeated Central Park Blue by winning four sets and 30 games to Central Park’s two sets and 27 games. Green took the opening four sets before Central Park Blue bounced back to take the final two rubbers.
Haven Black had an easier match, claiming four sets and 34 games to defeat Central Park White, who won two sets and 23 games.
In the Section One Girls, Horsham Lawn won against Central Park in another close contest.
Tahlia Thompson continued her run of good form for Horsham Lawn, winning her singles rubber 6-1 against Holly Nuske to help set-up the four sets to two victory.
Thompson is yet to lose a set in Horsham Lawn’s undefeated start to the season.
“The Section One Girls won four sets to two but it was closer than that. Our girls got the last couple of sets to decide that match,” Maree Thompson said.
The two Haven sides came up against each other, with Haven Purple getting the better of Haven Pink four sets and 30 games to two sets and 19 games.
Meanwhile, Natimuk Gold and Blue were both dominant in their respective wins over Quantong Red and Black.
Natimuk Gold dropped only seven games for the match against Quantong Red, with Kyra Clarke taking her singles rubber 6-0 against Sophie Allen. It was a similar story for Natimuk Blue, who lost just the six games against Quantong Black.
