HORSHAM’S headspace centre has applauded the majority ‘yes’ vote in the same-sex marriage survey.
The organisation’s chief executive Jason Trethowan, with other leading youth mental health organisations, said it was a momentous day in Australian history. He said the result affirmed for young LGBTQI Australians that they had a bright and positive future in this country, and that their mental wellbeing was a priority.
“Now we have this result, it is time to unite and end the negativity,” he said.
“We also call on our leaders and parliament to deliver on legislating marriage equality by the end of 2017 – a great way to start fresh in the new year for the LGBTQI community and Australia.”
He reminded people that support was available.
“We know the distress caused by the postal survey does not end with this result and remind young Australians that mental health services and support are available,” he said.
He said people could call headspace on 5381 1543 or visit www.headspace.org.au for assistance.
