The redevelopment was achieved after a decade of planning and fundraising.
The upgrade includes an administration office, community meeting spaces and an outside deck area.
Murtoa and District Neighbourhood House manager Trish Adler said the space was a significant asset to the community.
She said the house was a bustling, welcoming place for people to learn, work, create, plan, socialise and deliver community events and services.
“We have a magnificent building that can better support the broken development and wellbeing of a whole Murtoa and district community,” she said.
Ms Adler said the vision for the project goes back more than a decade.
She said the initial plan was to convert a space beside the original building into a coffee shop and training centre.
The group was awarded funding from the state government in 2009 towards the project. However, the plans were adapted after the group realised the original building was not up to standard.
The Murtoa and District Neighbourhood House redevelopment required the old structure to be demolished and replaced with a new building.
With a new and improved space, Ms Adler said there were opportunities for continued growth and development.
In addition to the state government’s contribution and independent fundraising, the federal government put $225,000 towards the project.
Ms Adler said the dream would not have become a reality without assistance from the federal government’s drought communities program.
Member for Mallee Andrew Broad officially opened the building.
Mr Broad said the space would become a major activity hub for the town.
He said the house would become a great meeting space for playgroups, dance groups and other committees and it would also provide office space for the town’s newspaper.
While the official opening was on Friday, the building will not be open to the community until all construction is complete.
