Hindmarsh Shire Council awarded the groups $1000 each on Wednesday. The money comes from council’s Community Action Grants program.
The centre will use the money for a vintage cycle display at its Wheels for the Wirraway event on March 10, to raise money to buy a Wirraway plane for its collection.
The centre expects the event to attract between 1000 and 1500 visitors to Nhill.
The town committee will use its grant for a Light the Lake event, to commemorate the 180th anniversary of Edward John Eyre’s exploration of Lake Hindmarsh.
Eyre followed Sir Thomas Mitchell’s route to the Wimmera in January 1838, and discovered and named the lake.
The committee hopes the event will attract a few hundred people to the town.
