Campers and fishers have notified Ararat Rural City Council of the weed issue.
Through investigation with the Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority, the weed has been identified as 'azolla'.
“The presence of azolla is evident in many farm dams and lakes across Victoria. Azolla is a native aquatic plant found in still or slow-moving water bodies and appears green or red, depending on exposure to the sun,” a council statement said.
“The weed is not harmful to water life or humans. In actual fact, nutrients and quality of the water supply could improve with the presence of azolla, leading to growth of fish in the lake.
“Ararat Rural City’s environmental health officer has been made aware of the issue and will monitor any water quality changes.”
The council said anyone wanting more information could phone 5355 0200.
