Wimmera footballers joined the extended squad as they were tested in a variety of activities.
AFL Wimmera-Mallee football development manager Jason Muldoon said it was an intense weekend.
“(The players were) tested in the 20-metre sprint, agility run, heights and weights and then the yo-yo test, which replaces the old beep test,” Muldoon said. “All the boys tested really well.”
Muldoon said Horsham Saints’ players Brayden Helyar and Nick Caris had standout performances during the testing. Helyar notched 20.8 in the yo-yo test, while Caris completed the 20-metre sprint in less than three seconds.
“Brayden Helyar did really well in the yo-yo test,” Muldoon said.
“Nick Caris ran under three seconds for the 20-metre run. Overall all the speeds were good, everyone was fairly consistent.”
The squad also completed non-physical training, preparing the players for the higher level of football, which comes with increased public and media scrutiny.
“There was some education around social media use and everything like that,” Muldoon said.
“(Rebels coach) Mark Greig had the opportunity to have a chat too about his expectations and what’s required at TAC level.”
Wimmera hopefuls will have their final training session on Monday before regrouping on January 29.
“The players will be given individual programs to do over the break,” Muldoon said. “It’s an important time because it’s when they really need to dig deep and be disciplined in what they do.”
