Wimmera students received their ATAR scores on Friday.
Horsham College head of transition and pathways Caroline O’Donnell said students concerned about their results should seek advice from their schools.
Ms O’Donnell said doors remained open for students who did not reach the required ATAR for a university course.
She said there were back entrances to most courses.
“What students don’t often realise is that there are a lot pathways and opportunities to get into the careers that they want,” she said.
“There are so many options to get them where they want to go – other degrees, advanced diplomas – but they need to seek advice.”
Horsham’s St Brigid’s College VCE co-ordinator John Lowes reaffirmed seeking advice was key.
“It is a matter of being proactive and not giving up. There are plenty of alternative pathways to explore, they just need to ask,” he said.
“Students can even contact the institution they were hoping to go to and seek out advice from them.”
Murtoa College principal Tony Goodwin said there were always students who were disappointed with their results. However, he said students should not give up on their goals.
Mr Goodwin said the school was there to guide students in their next steps.
“We will talk about adjusting their preferences so they feel like they can continue,” he said.
“We even suggest to look at similar courses at different universities they might be able to get into.”
Mr Goodwin said it was important for students to remember this was only the beginning of the next chapter in their lives.
“This might not have been the result they were after, but it doesn’t determine where they go because some of the best people, the richest people, and the most successful people in the world didn’t do well in school,” he said.
“This door has closed, but another one will always open and the school will help them through.”
