The game started off close and the Hornets found themselves behind at quarter-time by four points. Maryborough set the tone of the match early in a physical contest.
The Blazers opened their lead in the second quarter to as much as seven points, leading 20-13.
However, the Lady Hornets, who have lost only one match so far this season, were up for the challenge.
The Blazers quickly saw their lead disappear as Liv Jones and Georiga Hiscock scored back-to-back three pointers.
Suddenly the Lady Hornets were up by eight points at half time.
Coach Gareth Hiscock said it was an intriguing half of basketball.
“It was a really close first half and we were down at quarter-time,” he said.
In the second half, the Horsham Lady Hornets helped themselves to basket after basket, scoring 61 points for the half to leave the Maryborough Blazers in tatters.
From a 38-30 lead at half-time, the scoreline read 67-37 at three-quarter-time in a truly dominant scoring display.
The Lady Hornets continued their run in the final term, to win the game 98-53.
Hiscock said the side gelled together in the second half in all areas of the court.
“Offensively we just clicked in the second half and shot 61 second half points, which was great,” he said.
The Lady Hornets defence has been solid much of the year and it was no different on Saturday night.
“Our defence has been working pretty well for the last couple of weeks,” Hiscock said.
Hiscock said it was a very physical match and that his team adapted well.
“I think we adjusted to the refereeing a bit better. They were allowing a lot of physical contact,” he said. “We spoke about making the extra pass to spread their defence and we adjusted really well in the second half.”
Ema Iredell top scored for the Lady Hornets with 21 points, while Maddi Iredell scored 18 points.
“(The Iredell sisters) are fierce competitors. They love a physical contest and it was a physical game so they played well,” Hiscock said.
Georgia Hiscock also played a good game, scoring 20 points and five three pointers. Coach Gareth Hiscock said Georgia broke the game apart.
“Georgia had five three pointers and that’s what the game needed,” Hiscock said. “(Maryborough) were playing a tight zone we needed someone to step up and play some outside shots, and she did that.”
The Lady Hornets sit top of the North West table.
