He was born in Nampa, Idaho, on February 5, 1947, to Kenneth and Evelyn Hazen.
Dick graduated from Nampa High School in 1965. While at Nampa High School he was on the track team, where he held several track records.
In December of 1966 Richard married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Elizabeth (Beth) Edmiston.
They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in December of last year.
Dick received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology and Chemistry from the College of Idaho in 1969 and then attended Graduate School at the University of Nevada, Reno, from 1970 to 1972.
During this time is when he discovered his interest in education, which would lead he and Beth on their adventures to Australia and Alaska.
Dick was a teacher at Horsham High School from 1972 to 1974, and Beth taught at St. Brigid’s College.
Dick and Beth greatly enjoyed their time in Australia, and travelled to as many places in Australia as time allowed.
Most of all, they enjoyed time spent with their many friends, and their students. Dick and Beth have made numerous trips back to Australia to visit friends.
In 1975, Dick and Beth moved to Bethel, Alaska, where he was a teacher and administrator for the local school district.
While in Bethel, they also started their family.
In 1979, the family moved to Anchorage, Alaska.
Dick and his business partner started Educational Management Associates (EMA), providing various support services to schools in Alaska.
Their company was instrumental in placing computers and software into school districts throughout Alaska and various other US states.
He retired from EMA in 2013.
Dick and Beth enjoyed travelling, both around the US and overseas.
Enjoying the great outdoors was also a passion of Dick’s, right to the very end.
He enjoyed gardening, camping, hunting, fishing, and hiking with his family and friends.
Dick was also an avid golfer and enjoyed golfing ‘year-round’ with old friends and new ones.
Dick is survived by his wife Beth Hazen, his children Elena, Quinten and Gregory, and his grandchildren Tyler, Richard and Elyssa.
A long-time wish of Dick’s was for his children and grandchildren to visit Australia - in particular Zumsteins, McKenzie Falls and The Grampians - and he was eagerly awaiting the January planned family trip before his untimely passing.
In honour of his wish, Beth and family will be visiting Horsham from January 4 to 7, 2018.
Condolences may be sent c/- 9 Vermont Street, Horsham and will be passed on to Beth.
