This year’s recipients included Horsham College’s Luke Busbridge and Horsham Special School’s Drewan Jennings-Davey.
Also recognised were Donald High School’s Rachel Downes, Nhill College’s Sophie Cole and Kaniva College’s Renae Feder.
Renae said it was an honour to be nominated by her teachers.
The Mallee Excellence Awards are given to students who show great endeavour and leadership in the classroom and in the community.
Renae was an active member in the Kaniva community.
“At school I don’t make a fuss, I just get on with it. I am also a friendly person and try to talk to everyone in the corridor,” she said.
“I’m also netball coach and umpire, basketball umpire, a member of the South Lilliumur Fire Brigade and I do stewarding at the Kaniva Show.”
Having completed year 12 with respectable results, Renae said she hoped to continue adding to her achievements.
“I plan to study at education and health science at Flinders University so I can become a physical education teacher,” she said.
Member for Mallee Andrew Broad commended the region’s student leaders.
“We have a series of recipients across out patch this year and I congratulate those students on their great efforts,” he said.
“In the electorate of Mallee we also had the Australian Apprentice Trainee of the Year, a young man called Dustin Cross from Horsham.”
Mr Broad thanked teachers who had taken the time to invest in the region’s youth.
