Mr Summerhayes, 59, died on Saturday after the car he was driving collided with a truck near Banyena.
School principal Andrew Parry said the school community was shocked and deeply saddened by Mr Summerhayes’ death.
“Bruce was a sincere gentleman who actively participated in all school activities,” he said.
“Bruce started teaching at Horsham West Primary School in 1993.”
Mr Parry said Mr Summerhayes mostly taught students in years 2 and 3 over his 25 years at the school.
“Early in his career Bruce also taught at Narrawong, Warrnambool, Panmure, Dooen, Kalkee, Donald, Natimuk, Horsham Primary School, Quantong and Nurrabiel,” he said.
“Bruce was a respected and valued colleague who made a significant impact on the students he taught over many years.
“He will be missed by everyone in the Horsham West and Haven Primary School community.”
Mr Summerhayes was also involved in the Wimmera Poultry Club.
He will be farewelled at a service at St Andrew's Uniting Church, Horsham, on Tuesday.
