The project, which has been in the works for more than a year, is expected to be completed around the middle of this year.
Ben Peucker, secretary of Laharum Sports Incorporated, a group which helps manage the oval and its user groups, said he was excited to see the project get under way.
“We are looking forward to on ground work starting and for it to be completed around June,” he said.
“At the end of this we are going to have a very good facility that is going to serve us very well into the future. It’s a facility we could be using for 40 or 50 years.”
The new changerooms will be built next to the old rooms, allowing clubs to continue to use the ground while works take place.
“Keeping the old changerooms will allow us to play a few home games at the start of the year,” Mr Peucker said. “Home games are pretty important for small clubs in terms of finances so it is good we can still offer that.”
Mr Peucker said building a new social room where the current changerooms are will be a future goal to continue the oval’s upgrades.
“A new social room where the old changerooms are is in our five to 10 year plan,” he said.
Horsham Rural City Council awarded Ballarat-based company MKM Constructions with the contract for the project in September, with Wimmera contractors expected to be utilised.
The project is being funded thanks to contributions from multiple parties – Horsham Rural City Council has provided $400,000 towards the project, with the community contributing $150,000 and the state government a further $100,000.
At the end of this we are going to have a very good facility that is going to serve us very well into the future.

Mr Peucker said without the contributions the project would not have been possible.
“The contributions that have been provided to this project are very significant,” Mr Peucker said.
Mr Peucker said the oval would welcome current and former athletes to a function in the middle of the year.
“We’re looking at having a function to bid farewell to the old changerooms in the middle of the year,” he said.
