Welcome everyone to 2018! I'm sure it will be in an eventful year just like all the others before. Hopefully it will be full of exciting new events, prosperity and well-being will abound. I am a little doubtful that that will necessarily be the case, as adversity and hardship pop their heads up somewhere in most years.

I am looking forward to 2018 in the Hindmarsh Shire as we have some great events and new projects that will happen and evolve.
We hosted the International Day of People with Disabilities at Nhill late last year.
I along with some other very proud councillors and family members attended a Federation University scholarship presentation to two amazing young Karen ladies in December last year.
The Dimboola skate park has been completed and the one in Rainbow will commence construction in about a week's time. Construction of the Rainbow brewery has commenced and the owner hopes to begin producing beer sometime in February.
The Aviation Museum at Nhill is very close to having the funds to purchase the Wirraway, which I am sure people are very excited about, as it means the museum will now have three planes that were used for training in World War II. Karen New Year was held in Nhill on January 6. It was a great day and the first time I have had the opportunity to attend and I thoroughly enjoyed the day.
It is great to see the Buangor to Ararat bypass recommence and hopefully there will be some extra funding available this year to repair our rural roads. They are certainly breaking up badly in the Hindmarsh Shire and from what I can see, aren’t any better in any of our adjoining shires. We have to lobby vigorously this year for extra funding in our rural and regional areas.
I went on a boat tour of the Wimmera River at Jeparit recently from the upper reaches at the Pioneer Museum right down to the weir – something I had never done before.
It gave me a whole new perspective of that section of the river and the huge untapped potential. It is a great asset and I am not sure that it has had the attention that it deserves. I am hoping I can convince everyone that this section of river should be looked at and developed.
In closing, I would like to say that I look forward to 2018 and I hope when we get to the other end of it, I can look back and say it has been a great year.
