West Wimmera Health Service announced on Tuesday Dr Zamurd Ahmad would return to the towns within two weeks.
Dr Ahmad has worked at the towns’ medical centres previously.
Tristar Medical Group manages both practices.
West Wimmera Health Service acting chief executive Ritchie Dodds said Dr Ahmad’s return was welcome news for the community.
“We appreciate the difficulty and frustration associated with the current GP vacancies across our region and we thank the community for their patience during this time,” he said.
“We will continue to work closely with Tristar Medical Group to support them in filling the remaining vacancies.
“In the meantime, if you’re having difficulty accessing a GP in Kaniva, Goroke, Jeparit or Rainbow, please contact your local hospital or health centre to discuss ways we can help link you with the services you need.
“Of course, in an emergency, always dial 000 in the first instance.”
Kaniva resident Narelle Maddern told the Mail-Times she was worried people would start leaving the town if there was no doctor.
Ms Maddern said she was extremely happy to learn residents in the town had access to a doctor again.
“It is fantastic for the town and whole community,” she said.
“Let’s hope we can keep her this time and give her any assistance she might require.”
