Wimmera Health Care Group announced on Thursday morning it had awarded the tender for the $5.3-million centre to the Horsham-based company.
Health care group chief executive Catherine Morley said the centre would likely be completed by the end of November.
“I’m sure the community will be very happy to see work start on the centre, a project which has received so much community support,” she said.
“This wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for the successful fundraising from the community, as well as the support and financial contributions from the commonwealth and state governments.
“The Commonwealth government made the first contribution to the project of $1 million in March, 2015. The state government has since contributed a further $2.6 million to make the project a reality.”
Wimmera Health Care Group Foundation, Wimmera Hospice Care Trust, the Geoff and Helen Handbury Foundation, Luv-A-Duck, Rural Northwest Health, Edenhope and District Memorial Hospital, Hillross Horsham and Horsham Apex Club are among the major fundraising contributors to the project.
Wimmera Health Care Group management board chairwoman Marie Aitken said the centre’s official name would be Wimmera Cancer Centre – Supporting our community with cancer, palliative care and dialysis services.
Mrs Aitken thanked everyone who had been involved with the project to date.
“It will be an exciting year as we can now watch the centre take shape,” she said.
Rachael’s Wish – the community fundraising campaign for the centre – launched in June 2015 with a $1-million target.
The campaign reached its goal a little more than a year later.
Fundraising has continued since, with the tally reaching more than $1.6 million in November last year.
