MANY Wimmera athletes who have excelled in their chosen sport have also earned the title of Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly’s Sport Star of the Year.
For 34 years, the awards have recognised a high calibre of sportsmen and women.
Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly executive director David Berry said the Sport Star of the Year celebrated and recognised the outstanding achievements of Wimmera athletes.

He said past winners were Olympians, representatives of Australia or reached the top of their field.
Previous recipients included Alethea Gulvin, Shane Kelly, Kevin Magee, Kerri Tepper, Melissa McClure, Jason Niblett, Aaron Bruce, Mark O'Brien, Jannik Blair and Darcy Tucker.
“We had Kevin Magee win a world motorbike championships in Horsham, we have had Olympians like Alethea Gulvin, and Australian representatives,” he said.
“They have achieved massive things in Horsham.”
Mr Berry said the greatest part about these athletes were they never forgot were they started.
This year’s nominees are a strong group and I can expect that we will see more of them in years to come

“It shows that we can support them to achieve great things and they go further – and even when they have reached their top, they never forget where they have started,” he said.
“That is where the sport star rings true.”
Mr Berry said this year’s nominees showed great promise and had the potential to follow in the footsteps of previous winners.
“This year’s nominees are a strong group and I can expect that we will see more of them in years to come,” he said.
He said the awards, however, were a celebration of grassroots sport, which would “ring true” tonight.
