EARLIER: WEDNESDAY
WIND gusts of up to 96 kilometres an hour have been recorded in the Wimmera on Wednesday.
The Bureau of Meteorology has a severe weather warning for damaging winds in place for parts of the region, including Horsham, Stawell and Ararat.
Mount William in the Grampians recorded wind gusts of close to 100km/h at 8.46am on Wednesday, while wind gusts reached 82km/h in Horsham at 7am.
Nhill recorded wind gusts up to 74km/h on Wednesday morning.
The Wimmera is in for a reasonably mild day, with the bureau predicting top temperatures between 23 and 26 degrees.
Temperatures will stay in the low to mid-20s for the rest of the working week before a warmer weekend.
A strong cold front is driving the wild weather and the strong winds.
The bureau predicts the damaging winds will rapidly ease over the state’s west early on Wednesday afternoon.
The State Emergency Service has advised people to:
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
- Keep clear of fallen power lines.
