Coach Gab McCulloch returns for another year at the helm of the A Grade side and said they will need to continue to develop juniors if they want to have a successful future.
“We will be introducing a couple of junior players into our A Grade this year,” she said.
“They are young and won’t find it easy but they are our future. Unfortunately they will have to come up to A Grade a bit earlier then planned but they’re ready.
McCulloch is eager not to let others judge the Taylors Lake A Grade netball side solely on the amount of games they win this season.
“I would be pleased to see growth, whether it be mental or physical, in our playing group,” she said.
“We don’t talk about wins and we are not judging ourselves or our success on wins alone. This season is about learning from the tough sides. We just want a fun and family-friendly atmosphere so the juniors want to stay, and then hopefully in four or five years we can be talking about wins.”
McCulloch said this season would be another step towards long-term success for Taylors Lake.
“We need to keep hold of our juniors. We want them to be 18 and still playing here,” she said.
“The plan is to bring up our own juniors and then create strength from what we already have.”
Taylors Lake will start its season against Jeparit-Rainbow on April 7.
Q and A with Gab McCulloch
What are your goals for the 2018 season?
In recent years our junior netball has been very strong. Our goal like last year is to support these junior players and encourage them to stay on and play senior netball, in an attempt to strengthen all our netball sides.
Who will you be looking to have a big year?
We are not interested in singling out individuals. We are trying to teach our girls the importance of teamwork and the strength that this can create.
How will your coaching style be changing this year?
Like last year I intend to work on mental toughness and sportsmanship. I want to create an atmosphere where success is not judged purely on your position on the ladder.
