Troy Oakley was driving between his farms on the Wonwondah-Toolondo Road, Nurrabiel, when he came across a car that had hit a tree and rolled
The driver of the car was a woman in her 70s.
Mr Oakley said the car was on fire when he came across it.
“I was in shock – it’s not something you see everyday or expect to come across,” he said.
Mr Oakley said he didn’t have to think about what to do next.
“I pulled over and ran to the car to see if the woman was okay,” he said.
“She was in a fair bit of pain and couldn’t get out of the car, but she was speaking to me.
“I couldn’t get any of the doors open, so I smashed the window and pulled her out.”
Mr Oakley said it wasn’t too difficult to break into the car.
“The window was slightly open, so I just put my fingers in there and pulled it out,” she said.
Mr Oakley said the woman had a big cut on head as well as bumps and bruises.
“Once I got her out, I called triple zero,” he said.
“Another person soon stopped to help and we got the woman across the road, away from the fire.”
Mr Oakley said the timing was very lucky.
“Pretty much as soon as I got her out, the fire engulfed the rest of the car,” he said.
An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics were called to the scene at 1.30pm on February 8 after reports of a car hitting a tree and then rolling over.
She said the female driver, in her 70s, was then flown by air ambulance to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
“She had suspected head, neck and spinal injuries and was in a serious but stable condition,” she said.
Mr Oakley said he just did what anyone else would have done.
“If I was in the same situation I would react in the same way – anyone in that situation would have done the same thing,” he said.
