McDonald joined the leadership group in 2016 and remained in the group last season.
Melbourne has opted for a smaller leadership group this season in an effort to improve communication.
Nathan Jones and Jack Viney remain as co-captains, with Max Gawn and Jordan Lewis stepping up as vice-captains.
Along with McDonald, Bernie Vince has also been cut from the Demon’s leadership group.
Melbourne starts their season on March 25 against Geelong at the MCG.
