Councillors went on a boat tour of the Wimmera River weir pool in the town on Wednesday.
Hindmarsh mayor Ron Ismay said the aim was to showcase to councillors what was already there, and develop ideas for increasing facilities.
“I identified an area on the banks just the other side of the bridge that I'm going to suggest we use as a starting point to develop areas where people can camp,” he said.
“It will give people something more than just a dirt track to walk along. There is the odd chair here and there, but even they are pretty old and sad-looking.
“I think there's some great potential there, and I really believe Jeparit needs something to help attract people to the town.
“There is the Wimmera Mallee Pioneer Museum, but the river also has huge potential.”
Hindmarsh council allocated $8000 for a fishing pontoon to be installed on the river at Jeparit in 2016, to help draw people to the area.
