Haven, who have struggled against top two sides St Michael’s and Drung South this season, had a statement to make against second-placed Drung South.
Haven edged Drung South by just two sets, winning eight sets to six, while the teams were also separated by just two in the games column. Haven won 92 games to Drung South’s 90.
Drung South were solid in the singles sets, and won three out of four of the singles clashes.
Kate-Lyn Perkin, Georgia McLennan and Lachlan King all won their singles sets for Drung South but it was not enough to push their side over the line.
Haven’s Edmund Bush was in solid form, and he won his singles set against Drung South captain Ben Brooksby 9-3.
Bush also teamed up with Lachlan Punchard for a 9-2 doubles set win against Brooksby and Justin Lane.
The two sides traded set wins throughout the contest, with neither able to set up a significant lead over the other.
In the end, Haven, claimed four of the last six sets to earn themselves a close victory.
The win will help Haven build some momentum heading into finals.
With a final round clash against St Michael’s, it looks extremely unlikely Haven will be able to move into second place, but they will have some added mental strength heading into finals.
St Michael’s had a solid win against Kalkee at the weekend, as they look to hold their nerve at the end of the season.
St Michael’s are just one win away from completing a perfect season. They defeated an undermanned Kalkee 10-104 to 4-68 at the weekend.
St Michael’s young star Steffi McDonald, who is yet to drop a set all season, was clinical as she defeated Melissa Beddison 9-0.
Elsewhere, bottom two teams Horsham Lawn and Natimuk had very little to play for, with both teams out of finals contention.
Natimuk, who were chasing their second win for the campaign, competed well but fell short to a stronger Lawn outfit. Lawn set up the victory by winning four of the first five sets and ultimately won nine sets and 104 games to Natimuk’s five sets and 76 games.
Despite the best efforts of Natimuk’s Carl Sudholz and Lana Brown who both won their singles sets, Lawn were simply too good in the majority of the doubles sets.
Lawn finish their season against Kalkee next week, while Natimuk take on Drung South.
