A NEW skate park in Nhill will go ahead after the state government announced $100,000 for the project.
Hindmarsh Shire mayor Ron Ismay said council received confirmation from Sport Minister John Eren that its application through the 2018-19 Community Sports Infrastructure Fund was successful.
Council completed a new skate park in Dimboola earlier this year, and construction for a Rainbow skate park is underway.
Council received money from the state government for both projects.
Cr Ismay said council and the Nhill community would also contribute financially to the Nhill park, which will be built at Jaypex Park.
He said construction was not likely to start until at least late 2018, given the government funding would not be made available until July.
Cr Ismay said he expected contracts to be awarded late this year.
He said the new park would be a fantastic addition to the town.
“The new skate park will be constructed from concrete and will be designed in such a way that it will encourage and challenge new and experienced skaters alike,” he said.
“The design for the Nhill skate park is different to the Dimboola and Rainbow skate parks, as this will provide three unique challenges for participants across the shire.
“The announcement of this funding is proof of the importance in strategic planning, as all three of these skate parks were identified and supported at community planning meetings during the development of the Hindmarsh Shire Sport and Recreation Strategy, Nhill Community Precinct Plan and similar planning documents for Dimboola and Rainbow.”
Cr Ismay said a lot of work went into assessing the best location for the project.
He said following community consultation last year, Jaypex Park was identified as the most suitable place for the skate park.
“This location will provide easy pedestrian access from Victoria Street and public toilets and the soundshell,” he said.
“Playgrounds and picnic facilities are located nearby.
“As Jaypex Park is a very popular location for both Nhill residents and visitors travelling through Nhill, the inclusion of a new modern skate park will enhance this reputation and provide another activity.
“Because of the location beside Victoria Street, security fencing will be installed alongside the skate park.”
Cr Ismay said a concept design had been established as part of the funding application, but the community would have opportunities to have input into the final design.
Meanwhile, the Dimboola and Rainbow skate parks will be officially opened in April.
Cr Ismay said council had invited Member for Western Victoria and Regional Development Minister Jaala Pulford to open the parks.
