The 16th installment of the event on March 16 and 17 will feature team Involved, aimed at anyone who wants to be involved in the annual fundraiser who does not have a team.
The annual event raises money and awareness for Cancer Council Victoria, recognises survivors and carers, and celebrates the memories of those who have died.
Thirty-four teams participated in last year’s event and raised more than $100,000.
Teams have already raised more than $41,000 this year.
Involved team leader Mary Dalgleish said she hoped to make the event less daunting for people who wanted to be part of it, but did not know anyone.
“I’ve been on the event committee and for the past few years I’ve done registrations. There are always a lot of people who come and say they just want to buy a relay jumper, have a bit of a walk, then go home,” she said. “I thought, ‘there are a lot of people like that’.
“Even at the library in Horsham where I work, people would come in and say, ‘I’d be in a team but I don’t know anybody’.
“This team is for them.
“I wanted people to feel like they could be involved without having to do all the extra fundraising – the main thing is getting the message out about hope and awareness.”
Mrs Dalgleish said the team would have a site at the event, and people could walk as much as they wished, or support others.
“Even if they’re not able to walk, people can be there cheering others on and just feel like they’re part of it,” she said.
Mrs Dalgleish said about 20 people had registered for Involved so far.
She said people could register by visiting her at Horsham Library, on the Relay For Life website – www.relayforlife.org.au – or by searching the team name on Facebook.
Mrs Dalgleish said people could also register at the event. Registration is $35, which includes a Relay For Life shirt.
This year’s relay at Horsham's Coughlin Park will start with an opening ceremony at 5.45pm on the Friday night.
There is a candlelight ceremony at 9pm before the event’s closing ceremony at noon on Saturday.
The relay will include free live entertainment including Horsham band All the Kings Men, plus cake stalls, raffles, games, and a dunk tank.
This year there is also a $1000 prize on offer for the team that walks the most laps at the event.
The money – donated by Community Axis – will go towards the winning team's fundraising total.
