Mrs Hermans said the recognition was unexpected. She was nominated by her mother Anita Masiero.
“Because she’s my mum she saw everything I did – the behind the scenes that nobody else gets to see and how much work I put in,” she said.
Mrs Hermans started calisthenics when she was ten years old. She said she “actually hated it” because it was too regimented. It was not until her first competition where she fell in love with the sport.
As her love grew so did her involvement, taking on the role of assistant coach and then principal coach. She was named coach of the year by Calisthenics Victoria twice and Horsham Sports and Community Club’s coach of the year.
Mrs Hermans said helping people develop their confidence keeps her motivated.
“It’s nice winning at competitions, but I love standing side stage and seeing the girls get it – that means more to me,” she said.
