Year nine students from a select entry accelerated learning program entered for the first time and finished eighth overall in the year nine plus division. They were competing against schools from over 200 countries including Canada, India and Malaysia.
Math learning area head Leon Barents said the result was outstanding and a great achievement for the students.
“They were at the minimum age to enter the year nine plus division, which makes the result all the more impressive,” he said.
Mr Barents said the students were apprehensive about entering because of the success of previous Horsham College classes.
However, he hoped the competition would help him further engage his students in mathematics.
He said he knew the class had the potential to perform well and decided to enter the year nine class.
“The students initially found it challenging, but the practice helped build their confidence. We trained for a couple of weeks, highlighting areas of weakness and working on those areas,” he said.
“The students can’t believe how well they went. I don’t think they initially understood how amazing it was in a competition with four million entrants.”
The participating students were required to completed 20 games on various levels. They earned points by answering questions correctly alongside other students of the same age and abilities.
