The Baggies ticked off their goal of reaching the finals, going one better by recording an elimination final victory as well. But the Stawell-based team is not prepared to rest on their laurels.
“We don’t want to take a step back – we want to keep improving so hopefully that means we go a bit deeper into September,” returning Swifts coach Scott Carey said.
The Baggies have called on the aid of tried and tested past players to help achieve their goal of becoming a serious premiership contender.
2014 premiership heroes Ben Martin and Jakob Davis headline the recruits for Swifts, becoming crucial players to their structure.
“In the practice matches they have been instrumental with their leadership and have slotted in really nicely,” Carey said.
“It is exciting to get them back at the club and there are a few other inclusions as well which should make for a good year.”
Carey said he believes with a mix of youth and experience his team can do big things this year.
“We will try to move it as quick as we can, as straight as we can and try to run teams off their feet with the youth and speed we do have in the team,” he said.
“That’s the game plan and hopefully it pans out.”
Q and A with Scott Carey
How has pre-season been?
It has been as expected. We have had good numbers and the boys have put in the work on the track. Hopefully everything goes to plan and it pays off.
What kind of football can we expect from the Baggies in 2018?
We aren’t going to reinvent the wheel, we will play pretty much the same type of football.
We will try to move it as quick as we can, as straight as we can and try to run teams off their feet with the youth and speed we do have in the team. That’s the game plan and hopefully it pans out.
What young players are on the rise?
I can see massive improvement for the blokes who stepped up last year – your Zac Armers, Seth Blakes and the like.
Josh Davis stepping up from under 17s this year after a league B and F will be massive. He played a few games with us last year so will be good to get him a full season of senior footy.
