Smith took over as senior coach from Deek Roberts and Darryl Eastwell following the end of the 2016 season.
Smith said he will remain at the club and focus more on his on-field performances.
“With work and a young family I have decided it is the right time to step down,” he said.
“When you love football and coaching as much as I do you do take football home a lot. It starts to eat away at your free time.
“I want to keep playing and focus on that. I need a break from coaching and then a few years down the track I will hopefully have the desire to coach again.”
Taylors Lake has failed to win a game this season and has suffered some heavy defeats. Taylors Lake president Tammy McDonald said Smith has done a good job in tough circumstances.
“We knew Jye was looking to take a step back and he doesn’t want to leave the club, he is just going to step back from coaching,” she said.
“Jye is a highly motivated individual. He has the club’s best interests at heart and goes out there to continually encourage the players. He started with Taylors Lake as a junior coach and was fantastic and has really seen them develop their potential. He is a fantastic mentor.”
Ms McDonald said the club would consider all options when deciding on its senior coach for next season.
“We want to make sure with the club moving forward we appoint the right person, we aren’t going to rush it but we won’t leave it too late either, it will be a well thought out process,” she said.
“We are investigating all options, including local and non-local coaches.
“Jye has a lot of knowledge of the game and can still share that.”
