Grampians Visitor Information Centre co-ordinator and passionate fisherman Jason Meehan said the summer months provided some great opportunities around the area.
“With the warmer weather and water temperature you can get some really good red fin,” he said.
“They tend to school from now through until it gets cool, so you can get onto some really good schools of them and catch a bag.”
In the Grampians area, Mr Meehan said Rocklands Reservoir was providing very nice schools of fish.
However he said it could be inconsistent, with anglers bagging out one day and getting nothing the next.
“There’s been a really good stocking program starting there,” he said.
“It’s probably going to be a nationally renown fishing spot in five or so years.”
For those looking for a trophy fish, Lake Fyans near Halls Gap has been producing some big red fin.
Trout can also be caught at Fyans but Lake Bellfield is the pick of the spots, with a lot of active trout at this time of year.
Stocking programs have also benefited fishing at Taylors Lake, with some nice cod and yellow-belly being caught.
Lake Fyans and Wartook are also popular fly fishing spots, but Wartook has not been producing as well this season as previous years.
Water Catchment Authority chief David Brennan said the catchment team had worked hard in the past 12 months to ensure summer was a vibrant time for fishing.
He urged people to respect the environment.
“It’s fantastic to see people utilising the river and our wetlands, but the idea of leaving them how you found them is really important,” he said.
“Equally if you notice that there’s rubbish or fishing lines or something that can be a hazard to any animals or the waterways, we’re asking people to please pick up that rubbish as well.”
