Very smart, Horsham three-year-old colt, Bondi lockdown earned himself a working holiday in Queensland with a most impressive victory at Bendigo last Saturday night.
After making an unsuccessful challenge for the lead from gate six, the son of Somebeachsomewhere USA raced without cover for the entire 2150m journey and looked "a sitting duck" at the top of the home stretch given the hectic tempo.
However, the $2.60 fav. managed to find plenty over the final 100m and scored by 5.2m in a rate of 1:56.9 with a middle-half in 56.3 seconds.
The victory took Bondi Lockdown's record to five wins, seven minors and $98,620 from just 15 starts for owner/trainer/driver Aaron Dunn and after a couple of days of tossing around "will we or won't we?" Dunn decided to hit the road north in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
All going well, "Bondi" will contest the $100,000 Queensland Pacers Derby at Albion Park on Saturday, July 24.
The Charlton HRC staged a huge ten race program last Sunday afternoon, celebrating American Independence Day and the Club's links with their ambassador, driver Tim Tetrick and Meadowlands Racing.
Local trainers Greg Norman and Joey Thompson each landed a winner and former Charltonian, driver Ellen Tormey a running double.
Thompson scored first up with a newcomer to his stable, Cee Cee In America for Cormack Racing SA. The 5yo gelding was given the perfect trip by concession driver Ryan Sanderson and brought up career victory 9 at start 69.
Norman's talented 3yo gelding Aladdin, with Kerryn Manning aboard, proved too smart for the older horses in the 1609 metre sprint despite racing exposed throughout.
The former NZ'er, also owned by Cormack Racing, captured the $30,000 SA Pacing Derby in April and on what we saw at Charlton looks to have come back in fine fettle. Tormey's double came courtesy of Happyaslarry for former Mildura, now Marong trainer Terry Gange and Cuzin Lyndal for the in-form Kate Hargreaves stable.
