The United States has carried out two air strikes in Syria against Iran-aligned groups, a US defence official says, in what appears to be the latest response to a series of attacks against American forces in Syria and Iraq. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said one of the targets was a weapons storage facility. The other was a "command and control" facility, which would suggest a headquarters or other staffed structure. The official said the strikes took place on Sunday and a US review was under way to determine whether they had killed or wounded any Iran-aligned militia members. There is growing concern the Israel-Hamas conflict could spread through the Middle East and turn US troops at isolated bases into targets. US and coalition troops have been attacked at least 40 times in Iraq and Syria by Iran-backed forces since the start of October as tensions soar over the Israel-Hamas conflict. The US has sent warships, including two aircraft carriers, and fighter aircraft to the region since the conflict erupted on October 7 to try to deter Iran and Iran-backed groups.
