Around 3.30am, a male resident of a house on Percy Street in Prospect woke to noises in his bedroom.
He saw the silhouette of a person rummaging through his belongings but said nothing, believing it was one of his house mates.
"Within a short time, he realised it wasn't but the suspect had already fled with his wallet," said a police spokesperson.
"Thankfully no one was physically injured."
Police officers searched surrounding streets with sniffer dogs but could not locate the offender.
"There is minimal description of the suspect other than it was a person wearing dark clothing and of average height," said police.
