Editor Georgia Bailey announced his retirement to staff on Thursday afternoon.
It will take effect in mid July.
Lockwood began as a cadet on The Sun News-Pictorial in January 1969 and was with The Sun for a decade.
He joined the then family newspaper the Wimmera Mail-Times in January 1979 and has continued on the staff since then.
His roles have included reporter, sub-editor and acting editor.
His retirement marks the end of an era - he is the last Lockwood in Australia in full-time newspaper journalism, a family tradition that has spanned more than a century.
