President Geoff Baker said the event at Horsham RSL on Tuesday was a good opportunity to talk about the risks for scooter owners without insurance.
Mr Baker was hit by a car while on his scooter earlier this year. His scooter was extensively damaged.
He said the experience was eye-opening.
‘‘It was a wake-up call for me,’’ he said.
‘‘What if the situation had been the other way around, and my scooter had damaged a car, or worse, hurt a person?’’
Wimmera Mobility Group, Action Aids Australia and Blue Badge Insurance joined to host the event.
The event featured safety checks, safety tips and information about comprehensive insurance.
Mr Baker said many mobility scooter owners, including himself, were not covered by comprehensive insurance.
‘‘People were dumbfounded,’’ he said. ‘‘It gave them an understanding that it could happen to them.
‘‘People realised they should do something about it and get comprehensive insurance, not just theft and fire, as many had.’’
Mr Baker said the safety event was just one of many ways the group tried to help mobility scooter owners.
‘‘We are the only mobility group outside of Melbourne and we are always trying to push the safety message,’’ he said.
