Six students are collecting can lids which they will donate to the Zonta Club of the Adelaide Hills to be made into prosthetic limbs for people overseas in need.
The project supports the work of Thailand's Doctor Thedchai Jivicate who has developed a process of making artificial limbs entirely from recycled material.
Group member Alex Goldsmith said the group had collected 27,535 lids so far.
"Everyone had to pick a topic and my teacher Mr Rowe said 'have you heard about Lids for Limbs?'," he said.
"There were originally three in our group but another group of three wanted to do it too.
"We thought we would join forces and collect heaps more lids.
"We thought it would be a good challenge."
Alex said the pupils had collected lids from their families and friends, the school community, parish and church.
They also collected at Longerenong College, KFC and football matches.
Alex said the group was surprised at how many lids they had been able to collect and hoped to collect enough for two limbs.
Deputy principal Cathy Grace said the school was rapt with the project.
"We are proud of the initiative that the boys have shown and they have worked collaboratively to achieve an excellent result," she said.
"They are putting the effort in to help someone other than themselves."
The group is urging the Wimmera community to get behind their project and donate lids.
They hope to reach 35,000 lids by the end of the school year.
People can donate direct to the school or call 5382 3000 for more information.
