State government has extended its existing funding agreement with transport company Great Southern Rail until June 2016.
The Overland rail service operates two return services between Adelaide and Melbourne each week.
Great Southern Rail chief executive Chris Tallent said discussions with state government regarding a long term agreement for the service would continue.
Bookings for the first half of next year are now open.
