An ambulance crew drove the Horsham man, 24, in a stable condition to Wimmera Base Hospital after 9pm.

Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Gabrielle Degenhardt said the man had shoulder and back soreness.

State Emergency Services volunteers worked for about an hour to free the man from the vehicle.

Horsham Highway Patrol members driving south on the highway saw the man's car, a north-bound dark blue Ford Falcon sedan, about 8.50pm.

The Henty Highway was closed to traffic while emergency services attended and investigated the crash.

Wimmera Acting Superintendent Brad Dixon said police started to intercept the vehicle because of its excessive speed.

"The driver refused to stop and sped up," he said.

"A short time later, police came across the vehicle which had crashed into the railing of the bridge.

"Obviously, the pursuit was terminated then.

"The pursuit was a matter of seconds.

"The man was trapped in his car for up to an hour."

Mr Dixon said police expected to talk to the man about offences including excessive speed and reckless conduct endangering serious injury.

"We don't get a lot of pursuits," he said.

"Probably two or three a month, but rarely do they end in collisions.

"All pursuits in this area are reviewed by a panel of officers, so that will happen too."

Victoria Police Ethical Standards Department is also overseeing the investigation as part of standard procedure.

Police will interview the man when he is released from hospital.

Highway patrol Sergeant John McTaggart also appealed to the driver of a white four-wheel-drive to help police.

The vehicle was seen at the intersection of Holes and Grahams Bridge roads about the time of the police pursuit.
